Referrals for the program may come from teachers and other school representatives, churches, courts, Diversion, or any other appropriate community referral source.
When an adolescent is referred to this program they may be involved in the following activities:
- Helping at the local soup kitchen
- Picking up leaves in community parks
- Cleaning public offices
- Assisting at local nursing homes
- Helping community recreational departments

STARD (Students Talking About Responsible Decisions) - A group program for at-risk adolescents that provides a supportive setting in which they can share information and experiences while learning strategies for making healthy decisions. The program may focus on a number of topics that youth ages 11 - 17 may confront including substance use/abuse, conflict resolution, peer pressure, tobacco, self-esteem, social responsibility and the juvenile justice system. Referrals may come from schools, social service agencies, courts, police, School Resource Officers, Diversion and any other appropriate community referral source. There is a $25 fee for this program, unless included as part of the youth’s Diversion contract.
Tobacco Options - Our Tobacco Options Program allows Courts, Police and School Resource Officers to refer youth, ages 12 – 17, for participation in a program aimed at educating youth and adolescents about the dangers, health risks and addictive nature of tobacco. The Tobacco Options curriculum includes written material, videos and discussion. The youth may also receive community service hours in addition to the Tobacco Options Program.
Youth Educational Shoplifting Program (Y.E.S.) - This copyrighted shoplifting intervention program is designed to educate youth on the damage shoplifting does to themselves, their families and their communities, as well as providing insight into the legal consequences for their actions. The home-study program includes a verification quiz as proof of completion. It also includes a “Psychological Profile Analysis and Risk Assessment” to determine the youth’s potential to re-offend and/or the need for additional referrals and support. Referrals to Y.E.S. for youth ages 11 – 17 may come from Diversion, courts, schools, stores, or any other appropriate community referral source.
Adolescents Dealing with Anger and Conflict (ADAC) – This anger management program is a new offering for youth ages 12 – 17. The intensive and interactive four–session program is designed to help youth understand and better respond to anger and conflict. ADAC shows youth the effects of anger on their lives and the lives of those around them and teaches them to cope with their emotions in a positive and responsible manner, challenging them to make appropriate decisions. Referrals may come from Diversion, courts, School Resource Officers, churches and any other appropriate community referral source including families.
Teen Alcohol Awareness Program (TAAP) - TAAP is offered in partnership with the Newport Police Department. The program is available to youth who have been court-ordered to attend an alcohol awareness program. TAAP includes two powerful videos about youth and alcohol and the consequences that stem from alcohol use and abuse. A frank discussion follows about alcohol use among teens and how it impacts not only the teens themselves but also families and the community.
